Gary Burghoff, a.k.a. Radar from “M*A*S*H,” became a grandfather for the first time at 79, and his grandbaby looks so adorable!
The actor and proud family man looked “hardly recognizable” at 79 after he left the series and started a new career.
The real reason why Radar left “M*A*S*H” has been revealed.
Gary Burghoff, Corporal Walter Eugene “Radar” O’Reilly from “M*A*S*H,” became a first-time grandfather in 2023 when his son, Miles “Sonar” Burghoff, welcomed a baby girl. On March 23, 2023, Miles shared an Instagram photo of his heavily pregnant wife touching her big baby bump.
The lovely image showed his spouse smiling while standing outside among a field of flowers. Gary’s son explained how beautiful it had been watching his pregnant wife transform since they discovered her pregnancy in July 2022.
He shared how “proud” he was “for the mother she’s already become” and couldn’t wait to meet baby Rylee the following day. True to his word, when his baby girl arrived, Miles shared an Instagram image of him cradling her at the hospital and another of his wife wearing a hospital gown moments after the birth while holding her baby while lying in bed.
He proudly revealed that he’d caught “the best 8-pounder” of his life and shared that her name was Rylee Elisabeth Burghoff. The star’s son said his wife and child had done tremendously well and were both healthy, and he was proud of how well the new mother handled the birth.
Miles confessed that nothing could’ve prepared him to witness his first child being born. His emotions could only be described as “overwhelming” and “real,” with him admitting that he already loved being a father and couldn’t wait for the parenthood adventures he was about to undertake.
He thanked everyone who sent messages and those who called. Rylee made Gary, who was close to his son and very supportive of him and his professional fishing career, a first-time grandfather at age 79.
In 2007, it was revealed that Miles also knew his father best as his “mentor and partner” in fishing, a pastime they both enjoyed. The actor’s son shared how he’d introduced him to the sport during that year; he was still attending college in Florida and worked as an Alaskan salmon guide.
At the time, Miles was going to participate in the Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship, and his father was with him to “offer moral support.” Gary said his presence was a testament to parents doing what they loved with their children.
When the star used to act, fishing was a favorite pastime, to the point where he patented and invented improved rod butt handles and a chumming device that was used to lure baitfish. While starring in “M*A*S*H” for eight years, Gary received Emmy nominations for seven of those years.
In 1977, he finally won the accolade for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series; however, he didn’t attend the ceremony because he was out fishing. Laughing, the celebrity confessed:
“It was my lifetime moment, and I wasn’t there.”
The actor, who was married and divorced twice, had two other children besides Miles. His daughter was Gena Gale Burghoff, while his other son was Jordan Burghoff, while the former had chosen to become an actress, and the latter lived a private life.
Gary said about one of his children and his past career, “My son gave me the permission to accept my success.” Although Mile’s father had stayed out of the spotlight, his fans saw him in a rare clip.

In November 2018, Jordan shared a rare YouTube clip of his father giving Northern California people support during the fires that engulfed them to build awareness for the #CampFire cause. The fires caused lots of destruction to the communities’ homes which they’d lived in for years.
Fans were pleased to see the actor after so long, with one person noting how the star had “aged.” Another YouTube user confessed that they “hardly recognized Radar” and that he looked more like Harry Truman during his “sunset years.”
The person also hoped Gary could raise enough funds to help those affected by the blazes. A “M*A*S*H” fan said they couldn’t believe that was Radar until they heard his voice before asking God to bless him and his family while thanking him for his support.
A fourth person felt the world needed more “Gary Burghoffs” as soon as possible. In 1999, it was revealed that the actor became a born-again Christian amid his departure from “M*A*S*H” and prayed for assistance on what to do with his life.
The star recalled a voice telling him to “paint,” so he got a paintbrush and started making a name for himself as an artist and earning a new income. The painting was something he’d done casually for several years.
The subject of his work was animals because he described himself as “an animal person.” The celebrity grew up in Bristol, Connecticut, to now late parents Ann and Rodney, and a brother, David, now a retired industrial engineer.
Gary was fascinated by the animals surrounding his family home and would catch newts, snakes, and spiders. He put them in display cases before releasing them and started collecting art while starring on ”M*A*S*H.”
However, his artistic abilities were apparent in high school, and he became a painter in 1993. When asked to choose a painting for a government stamp for hunters, the then-50 celebrity was “euphoric” while locked up in a room for three days with 600 original duck paintings.
He left the show because he wanted to be more present as a parent to his two young sons from his second marriage. As a self-taught artist, he made 20 works, some from observing animals and others from photos.
Gary used an image and “played” with Nevada refuge lions to do his mountain lion piece. However, he continued acting and hosted a series about pets, and in Litchfield, he was both a visiting artist to wildlife preservationist and an empathetic counsel of the Korean era.

Why Did Radar Leave “M*A*S*H” and Why Did He Turn Away Millions?
Gary left “M*A*S*H” in 1979, and the series went on without his character. Producers wanted him back so much they offered him a $4 million contract to return, meaning he would’ve been one of the top three highest-paid television stars on air in 1980.
However, the actor wasn’t looking for more money and was more interested in renewing his faith, reconnecting with old friends, and returning to his roots. The star said when he turned 35, he yearned for the basic things like his friends and family and the life he knew in Wisconsin and Connecticut, stating:
“I needed a change, and I needed a break.”
However, Gary was ready to return to the show after some time and partook in the spin-off “After M*A*S*H” and his spin-off, “W*A*L*T*E*R.” Charles S. Dubin, the show’s director, claimed the celebrity left the show because of issues with his wife.
During one of their shoots, the actor allegedly kept crying, and things had to stop so he could take a walk as he “couldn’t go on.” Dubin thought the scene he was filming triggered him about his domestic problems.
